At the base of the Burgundian wine pyramid is Bourgogne AOC. These are wines that are made mostly from Chardonnay (for whites) and Pinot Noir (for reds) but may contain other grapes as well – Aligoté and Gamay being the most notable.

AOC level wines, especially those made from vineyards of the Côte d’Or, offer a great value introduction into the wines of Burgundy and many leading producers of Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines also produce AOC wines.

These wines are generally not made for aging and should be enjoyed in their relative youth, however some exceptions apply.
